Managing care during a patient's stay
The Scranton Temple Medical Group in conjunction with their internal medicine residents have affiliated with Community Medical Center to provide Hospitalist services to CMC patients.
At CMC there will be 3 teams, each consisting of the following:
Attending Physician - Senior Resident - Intern
STRP residents will also be doing electives at CMC in Pulmonary/Sleep/Critical Care Medicine, Emergency Department, Behavioral Health, Neuro, Cardiology and Rheumatology.
Patient handoffs will take place between 4:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. in the evenings and between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. in the mornings.
There will be three attending physicians, each rounding on his/her service, during the day Monday through Friday. One attending physician will be on call from 5:30 p.m. to 8 a.m. the following day and weekdays.
On the weekend, one attending physician will take call Friday evening to Monday morning and also do rounds on half the patients on Saturday and Sunday. The second attending will round on the remaining half of patients on Saturday and Sunday.
STRP is committed to seamless transition of patients between inpatient and outpatient venues of care and will strive for full collaboration with primary care physicians.

CMC Hospitalist Site Coordinator
Dr. Haitham Abughnia is a diplomat of the American Board of Internal Medicine, Clinical Faculty Physician and leader of STRP. Educated at the University of London - Imperial College School of Medicine, London, UK receiving a diploma in Cardiology, M.Sc. - Cardiology and University of Alfateh-Medical School, Tripoli, Libya receiving a Medical Degree. He completed his Internal Medicine training at STRP in 2007.
Jila Kaberi-Otarod, M.D., CNSP, ABCL
Dr. Jila Kaberi-Otarod is an Internal Medicine Primary Care Physician for Lackawanna Medical Group and a new part time faculty for STRP. Dr. Otarod is a Diplomat of the American Board of Internal Medicine, National Board of Nutrition Support Physician, American Board of Physician Nutrition Specialist and American Board of Clinical Lipidology. She completed Postdoctoral Nutrition Research Fellow at Columbia University, NY and TPN/Nutrition Clinical Fellow at New York Presbyterian Hospital. Dr. Otarod received her Medical Degree from Iran University of Medical Sciences in Tehran, Iran.
Pavan Irukulla, M.D., M.P.H.
Dr. Pavan Irukulla is new full time clinical faculty at STRP. He completed his Internal Medicine training at STRP in 2008, and is a diplomat of the American Board of Internal Medicine. He has a masters in Public Health from Gandhi Hospital in Hyderabad, AP. He received his Medical Degree from Kasturba Medical College in Mangalore, KA.
JayaKrishna Chintanaboina, M.D.
Dr. JayaKrishna Chintanaboina is a new full time clinical faculty physician for STRP. He has a Masters of Public Health, Western Kentucky University, a Bachelor of Medicine & Surgery, Sri Venkateswara Medical College, India. He completed his Internal Medicine training in 2009 at University of Buffalo Catholic Health System New York.
Wasique Mirza, M.D.
Dr. Wasique Mirza is an Internal Medicine Primary Care Physician, Medical Director for Scranton Primary Healthcare Center and a new part time clinical faculty physician for STRP. He is a Diplomat of the American Board of Internal Medicine, ECFMG Certified and is a Certified Specialist in Clinical Hypertension. He received a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery at Allama Iqbal Medical College in Lahore, Pakistan.
Eric Smith, D.O.
Dr. Eric Smith is a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine and a new part time clinical faculty physician for STRP. He is a Diplomat of the American Board of Internal Medicine. He has a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Juniata College, PA and became a D.O. at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his Internal Medicine training at STRP in 2004.
