Compassionate Care Hospice National Teleconference
4-21-2010

Community Medical Center was the location of the Hospice Foundation of America's annual national teleconference presentation, " Cancer and End-of-Life Care," co-sponsored by Compassionate Care Hospice and the PA Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers, NE Division in March 2010. This presentation was offered to health professionals in northeast PA seeking educational information about hospice care. CMC Cardiovascular Team Abstract Receives Award
4-8-2010

CMC's cardiovascular program presented an abstract at the 30th annual Cardiac Surgery Research and Education Foundation (CREF) Conference in Newport Beach, CA in early March. "Perfusionist Guided Technologies Reduce Blood Utilization and Cost of Cardiac Surgery" was selected for the Joseph R. Utley, M.D. award as the outstanding abstract presentation at this year’s meeting. Participants were impressed with the innovative use of new technologies by the CMC Cardiac team and the outstanding results that were documented. The CMC cardiovascular team continues to demonstrate their ongoing commitment to education, research and quality.

CMC Diabetic Education Program Merits ADA Recognition
4-5-2010

The prestigious American Diabetes Association Education Recognition Certificate for a quality diabetes self-management education program was recently awarded to the Center for Diabetes Management at Community Medical Center. ADA believes that CMC’s program offers high-quality education that is an essential component of effective diabetes treatment. The Association’s Education Recognition Certificate assures that educational programs meet the National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education Programs. CMC a Reaccredited Vascular Laboratory
3-11-2010

Community Medical Center’s Vascular Laboratory attained recognition for its commitment to providing a high level of patient care and quality testing for the diagnosis of vascular disease. The facility achieved Reaccreditations by the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Vascular Laboratories (ICAVL). ICAVL accreditation is valid for a period of three years. CMC Auxiliary Shows Support For Haiti
3-5-2010

Representatives from Community Medical Center’s Auxiliary met with the American Red Cross to present them with a check to support relief work in Haiti. Staff, volunteers and visitors to the hospital Gift Shop were given the opportunity to buy a chance for one of three $50 gift certificates. The initiative, led by the CMC Auxiliary, raised $210.00 which will benefit the American Red Cross International Relief Fund.

All of the proceeds raised by the Auxiliary will be directed to the American Red Cross International Relief Fund which will provide immediate relief and long-term support through supplies, technical assistance and other support to help those in need. The Red Cross has helped nearly 1.9 million Haitians since the January 12 earthquake, and expects to support hundreds of thousands of additional survivors in the years ahead.

The American Red Cross thanks the Auxiliary, staff, volunteers and visitors for their continued support.

Radiology Department Receives Award
2-23-2010

CMC Employees were presented with the "Commitment to Quality Award" for their contributions to improving quality in the Radiology Department. Rosemarie Shilinski, R.T.RM, Senior Mammography Tech and Joan Ewins, BS, R.T. (R)(CT)(MR), Senior MRI Tech have been instrumental in planning for Outpatient Radiology Core Measures. Michelle Holton, Senior Radiology Transcriptionist was instrumental in coordinating quality improvement efforts with the Radiology group and the medical staff.

CMC Heart Surgeon Performs 2,000th Open Heart Procedure

Russell F. Stahl, M.D., F.A.C.S is the Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Community Medical Center since 2000. On December 15, 2009 Dr. Stahl performed his 2000th open heart procedure. Dr. Stahl has been a leader in quality improvement and outcomes research. CMC congratulates Dr. Stahl and the Cardiac Services team who work tirelessly everyday to achieve exemplary outcomes for our patients.

CMC Employees had a Food Drive Contest
benefiting the WNEP Feed a Friend Program
12-8-2009

Community Medical Center’s Employee Activities Committee planned an Employee Food Drive Contest. This contest encouraged departments to collect large amounts of nonperishable food items that were weighted and averaged, the winning departments receive a pizza party. The CMC Food Drive Contest was a success, donating 4,512 lbs of food to the WNEP 16, Feed a Friend Program. The two winning departments were the CMC Wound Care Clinic and the Anesthesia Department but all employees showed that CMC cares about our community. CMC Plans Holiday Lights Event
11-13-2009

Community Medical Center is planning to invite the public to celebrate the Holiday Season by having the first Holiday Lights fundraising event scheduled November 21, 2009 at 7:00 PM at the hospitals main entrance. The festivities will include a choral concert by the Endless Mountains Children’s Choir and Bill Frye a local musician. The students of Johnson College’s Carpentry class of 2011 and the Junior Volunteers of CMC stand with the CMC Holiday Lights lobby display that they created and painted. CMC is Going Green

CMC receives Award from VHA Inc. for Clinical Excellence

Community Medical Center has received the Achieving Patient Care Excellence (APEX) Award from VHA Pennsylvania, the regional arm of VHA Inc, the national health care alliance. CMC won the award for its work to improve surgical care and prevent surgical infections. Community Medical Center was recently honored at Bedford Springs Resort, during a VHA Pennsylvania luncheon to celebrate the achievements of 27 member hospitals that received APEX Awards this past year. Resources for Ethical Health Care Decision Making

Resources for Ethical Health Care Decision Making will be presented and sponsored by Visiting Nurse Association Hospice & Home Health of Lackawanna County, Community Medical Center, Moses Taylor Hospital, Mercy Home Health & Hospice, and the Northeast Regional Cancer Institute. Keynote Speaker will be Maureen (Garia-Pons) Hart, president of NEPA Wedding Day Magazine, who has been a journalist for 37 years. She is a personal advocate of Hospice and “End of Life” issues based upon her own experience. National Award for Outstanding Organ Donation
Rates from the Gift of Life’s Donor program

Community Medical Center is among 20 area hospitals who received a National Award for Outstanding Organ Donation rates from the Gift of Life’s Donor program. CMC executive becomes national fellow honor

Kimberly J. Weaver, FACHE, Director, Operations & Strategy, at Community Medical Center in Scranton, has become a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives, the national professional society for healthcare leaders.

The group only has 7,500 fellows nationwide. To obtain Fellow status, candidates must pass an exam, meet academic and experiential requirements, earn continuing education credits and demonstrate community involvement.

“Becoming a fellow was important to me because ACHE is the premier professional organization in my field, and I am proud to be recognized by them for achieving this level of development in my career,” Weaver said.

ACHE fellows are up for recertification every three years.

Scranton Civic Ballet Company presented Community Medical Center with a generous gift in support of the CMC’s Annual Asthma Ski Day 2009. A Dance 4 a Cause was held where 55 dancers participated to raise the funds. The cause was chosen to benefit children with Asthma. “Signature Lab” in Lackawanna County

CMC’s Laboratory recently received a certificate that designates 100% membership participation in the Society of Vascular Ultrasound (SUV). This membership is inclusive of all the technologists and the Medical Director of the Lab. The “Signature certificate” indicates their high level of commitment to the vascular ultrasound profession and to the field of non-invasive vascular technology utilized in the diagnosis and treatment of vascular disease. CMC Vascular Laboratory participated
in National DVT Awareness Month

Community Medical Center Vascular Laboratory Department manager and staff gathered recently to “Sock it to DVT” during March, National DVT Awareness Month. CMC helped in the mission of the Coalition to Prevent Deep-Vein Thrombosis which is to reduce the immediate and long-term dangers of DVT and pulmonary embolism, which together comprise one of the nation’s leading causes of death. National DVT Awareness Month

CMC helped in the mission of the Coalition to Prevent Deep-Vein Thrombosis which is to reduce the immediate and long-term dangers of DVT and pulmonary embolism, which together comprise one of the nation’s leading causes of death. CMC: An Accredited Vascular Laboratory

Community Medical Center’s Vascular Laboratory attained recognition for its commitment to providing a high level of patient care and quality testing for the diagnosis of vascular disease.
