Meet Dr. Harry Schmaltz


Harry W. Schmaltz, M.D. received his premedical degree from Bucknell University and his medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine. He completed a five year internship and residency program at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, PA.

Dr. Schmaltz is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and is a member of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons. His main interest is treatment of the diseased hip and knee, particularly total joint replacement. Over the last ten years, Dr. Schmaltz has developed comprehensive patient treatment protocols including preoperative preparation, hospital stay and postoperative treatments in order to produce the best possible results for his patients.

Dr. Schmaltz is a clinical instructor for Biomet's minimally invasive total knee and total hip replacement systems. He teaches surgeons from the United States and around the world the principles and techniques of minimally invasive joint replacement surgery both at the Biomet laboratories as well as the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons' Learning Center in Chicago. Biomet is a leading manufacturer of joint replacement implants and is a leader in developing instrumentation and surgical techniques for minimally invasive joint replacement procedures.

Dr. Schmaltz's practice here in Scranton also serves as a surgical visitation site for orthopaedic surgeons from the United States and around the world. He has hosted surgeons from the United States, South America and Europe who visit his practice and observe his surgeries to learn about his minimally invasive joint replacement techniques and rehabilitation protocols. He is the medical director of NewSteps, the Joint Replacement Center at Community Medical Center. Dr. Schmaltz is on the staff of Community Medical Center as well as Moses Taylor and Mercy Hospitals. He is a member of Scranton Orthopaedic Specialists P.C. whose offices are located in Scranton and Clarks Summit.
